Wellness

A medium apple with the skin has about 4.4 g of fiber (16% DV), which makes it a good source of fiber. (USDA) Harvard's Nutrition Source says pectin, the soluble fiber in apples, may help prevent constipation and may have a modest effect on lowering LDL ("bad") cholesterol. (Harvard) Most of the fiber and flavonoids are in the skin, so a whole, unpeeled apple keeps more of them than a peeled apple or clear apple juice. (Harvard)

Pick, store and use

  • Pick

Choose crisp, juicy apples. For baking and cooking, MSU Extension suggests Jonathan, Empire, Ida Red, McIntosh or Golden Delicious. (MSU Extension)

  • Store

Keep apples in the fridge in a plastic bag with holes, or store a big batch somewhere cool (32–40°F). Stored this way they keep up to a month. (MSU Extension)

  • Use

Rinse under cool running water just before eating, with no soap. Leave the skin on for the most fiber. (MSU Extension)
