Pick, store and use
- Pick
Choose completely dry bulbs with plump, firm cloves and plenty of papery skin. Skip soft, shriveled or sprouting cloves. (MSU Extension)
- Store
Keep whole bulbs somewhere cool and dark, out of sun and heat. They stay fresh about a month. (MSU Extension)
- Safety
Garlic in oil can grow botulism at room temperature. Make it fresh, refrigerate at 40°F or lower and use within 4 days, or freeze it. MSU doesn't recommend canning garlic. (MSU Extension)
Where to get it nearby
No farm in our directory lists garlic by name yet. Many farm markets carry more than their listing says, so it's worth asking.
